Happy Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is coming and I hope you are planning something wonderful for your mom.  Me? My mom is gone now and I will spend the day in memory of her.

This is not meant to bring you down. It is meant to lift you up to a place where you understand the gift you have and be thankful. Or perhaps forgive. Parents are people too, you know.

Moms are different. There’s the traditional mom who cooks, cleans and sews. There’s the mom who roller blades and plays ball with her kids in the backyard. There is the mom who prays for her children diligently. There are children who pray for their moms.

Regardless, she is Mom. Buy a card. Do the dishes. Pick a rose.

Above all else, tell her you love her.

“The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” - Honore de Balzac (1799-1850)

“Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)

Margery Phelps’ article on how to be a good parent is an amazingly inspiring piece. The perfect read for Mother’s Day.

There are lots of poems for Mother’s Day on About.com.

Book Review - The CreationThe Creation, by Janice D. Green looks like a wonderful teaching tool for children of all ages. To be quite honest, I haven’t read this one. I have, however, read Janice’s articles. She teaches well and accurately. Her articles are generally written just the way I like them, straight to the point.

More importantly, she has a passion for teaching little ones the word of God.

While I can’t give the book a  rating, I can rate the author top notch and I recommend you view her work for yourself. I know you will find something uplifting for you and your family.

Book Review on Find the Animal

I recently reviewed this delightful book for an interview on a Christian radio station. I liked it so much, I had to share it with you.

God Made Something Strong is part of the Find the Animal Series, by Penny Reeves.

This delightful book teaches children, in a way they will understand and enjoy,  that God’s love is bigger than they can imagine. Even bigger than an elephant!

I have to give it 4.5 stars for the message it teaches. Add the fun, colorful and interactive illustrations and it’s a great find. Not to mention, the price is right!

Purpose of Essay Contest

April is National Child Abuse Awareness month and the timing of this release is perfect. So many children are hurting and this book with fun rhyme and colorful illustration teaches,  “There is true love for every child, everywhere.” It also teaches children they can help each other.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reveals alarming statistics in their reporting system. For example, “In 2010, U.S.state and local child protective services (CPS) received an estimated 3.3 million reports of children (43.8 per 1,000) being abused or neglected.” It is heartbreaking to say the least.

We may not be able to stop the abuse ourselves. But we can help mend broken hearts and end cycles of abuse as a community. Children can play a major role in that effort.

Essay Contest Topics

With that in mind, The True Love for Me? Essay Contest is designed to encourage children to notice good family values, friendship and love expressed in the home or classroom.  Once they’ve written about it, they can share it with others.

Participants must submit three to five paragraphs on how they know they are loved by one specific individual. It can be their mom, dad or anyone else who plays an important role in their life.

Note: Parents and teachers are welcome to offer advice in following the submission guidelines, but no assistance in writing please. Submissions will not be returned. Family members of Kids Book Group authors are excluded.  Children must be residents in the US or Canada. Submission must be handwritten, in English.

Here Comes the Judge

Kids Book Group authors will review all submissions. The top three participants will receive a free copy of True Love for Me? and their essays will be published by Mother’s Day and/or Father’s Day, 2013 on Kids Book Group website and various social media outlets. The first prize winner will receive  a $25.00 gift certificate from Amazon.com and $25.00 worth of merchandise from Apple Pie Books.

Let’s Get Started

Everybody can make a difference and every author has to start somewhere. Children are encouraged to do both by writing for a good cause in the True Love for Me? Essay Contest.
